Look inwards first

When someone or something upsets us, our first response must be to deal with the negative emotion. Our inclination may be to express our anger, or our hatred, or jealousy. In many cases, some external action may be appropriate. However, before doing this, we must deal with our own inner state. The fact is, circumstances will never go as we would like, and people will always do things that they shouldn’t. We must be able to maintain our inner peace in spite of this, and we will never find lasting happiness until this is achieved.

Hence, use the unfair situation as an opportunity to fight our anger with patience and understanding, or to fight jealousy by feeling joy for others. Whatever situation has given rise to these emotions is a wonderful opportunity to practise inner peace. Only when this has been done does external action become appropriate. Look inwards first.
